About Lady Lane Market

Lady Lane Market is London’s first women-led market. It was created to help more women, from all backgrounds, to trade on London’s street markets.

Regenerating Petticoat Lane Market

The market has been born as part of a regeneration programme for The Petticoat Lane Markets. Tower Hamlets council and City of London Council have collaborated through a Market Trader Recruitment programme to help improve the area for all who reside, work and visit the Petticoat Lane Markets.

It was identified that currently over 90% of all market traders are and have historically been male, so it was decided that we run a project that benefits local residents and to directly target and empower women in the community.

The market traders are all independent local women who have joined a programme of digital and business training to support and grow their emerging enterprises. The market will sell traditional and heart felt dishes from the indigenous communities of the women represented, as well as  hand crafted gifts, homemade natural products,  jewellery and gift ideas.

The market launched in November 2019 with market stalls run by women from diverse ethnic origins including Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Africa and the Caribbean. All traders have been selected for their passion and skill as well as to represent the inclusive multicultural boroughs where the market is located.

Why it’s called Lady Lane Market

The name Lady Lane Market was chosen to reflect the female community of the market and its provenance in Petticoat Lane. The founding women have benefited from business and digital marketing training provided by Tower Hamlets Council to support the development of their business.

The branding, website and social media training was provided by community news and media organisation Social Streets C.I.C,  a not-for-profit organisation working to increase participation in local community and high streets. The logo and identity was developed by Rosie Lee Creatives. Tower Hamlets Council, in conjunction with Sara Carter Business, provided the traders with business training

The ethos of the market

Lady Lane Market is committed to being as sustainable as possible. Traders use environmentally friendly packaging.
